Steering Rack Challenge

Learn how optimized and automated processes create fast and reliable results for hardness testing of a surface hardened steering rack.

Solution

An optimized and reproducible process of cutting the steering rack and preparing the specimens for automated hardness testing was developed. Customized auto-feed and clamping accessories was used during the cutting process and a customized specimen holder reduced preparation time for the following hardness test. The complete process consisting of:

  • Cutting with a modified Axitom-5 using an automatic feed and clamping system
  • Grinding and polishing with AbraPlan-30 and AbraPol-30 allowing for simultaneous preparation of 6 differently shaped specimens in customized specimen holder
  • A fully automated CHD-measurement of 15 indentations with Duramin-40AC1
